Using harvest-created gaps to regenerate and diversify in northern hardwood forests
Dr. Christel Kern is a Research Forester and a certified silviculturist for the U.S. Forest Service, Northern Research Station in Wisconsin. She received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point and her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on northern hardwood silviculture and ground-layer plant ecology, but also studies techniques aimed at the restoration of northern dry forest ecosystems. Much of her research draws from long-term studies as you will hear today. Outside of work, Christel enjoys being a wife, mother, and ski coach.
