Michel a complété un baccalauréat à l'UQAM en biologie par apprentissage par problèmes (2000), puis une maîtrise en biologie (2002), toujours à l'UQAM, sous la direction de Pierre Drapeau. Ses travaux de maîtrise visaient à caractériser les communautés de coléoptères associées aux forêts récemment brûlées.

Il a obtenu un doctorat en entomologie à l'Université McGill, sous la direction de Christopher Buddle et de Pierre Drapeau. Ses travaux visaient à caractériser les patrons de diversité des coléoptères saproxyliques des arbres morts des principales essences de la forêt boréale-mixte sur un gradient de décomposition, ainsi qu'à identifier les contraintes physiologiques et comportementales jouant un rôle dans la sélection d'hôte et dynamisant la succession des assemblages d’insectes au long du processus de décomposition.
